C'est l'histoire du petit Simon, qui a un problème : les autres écoliers se moquent de lui parce qu'il n'a pas de papa. Fatigué de ces moqueries, Simon décide de se noyer dans la rivière, mais est arrêté par le forgeron Philippe. C'est une opportunité parfaite pour le petit garçon, qui lui fait aussitôt un marché : si Philippe accepte de jouer le rôle de son père, il ne se noiera pas. S'il refuse, il retournera à la rivière.
Guy de Maupassant (1820-1893) est un écrivain français connu notamment pour son roman "Bel-Ami" (1885) et ses nouvelles telles que "Boule de suif" (1880) et "Contes de la bécasse" (1883). Né en Normandie et mort à Paris, il était un contemporain de Gustave Flaubert et d'Émile Zola. Son oeuvre est empreinte de la veine réaliste du milieu du 19e siècle, mais elle possède aussi des touches fantastiques et est pleine du pessimisme qui affectait Maupassant. Dès 1891, il est victime d'hallucinations, puis tente de suicider, est interné, et meurt finalement en juillet 1893 à l'âge de 43 ans. -
