Guy de Maupassant (1820-1893) est un écrivain français connu notamment pour son roman "Bel-Ami" (1885) et ses nouvelles telles que "Boule de suif" (1880) et "Contes de la bécasse" (1883). Né en Normandie et mort à Paris, il était un contemporain de Gustave Flaubert et d'Émile Zola. Son oeuvre est empreinte de la veine réaliste du milieu du 19e siècle, mais elle possède aussi des touches fantastiques et est pleine du pessimisme qui affectait Maupassant. Dès 1891, il est victime d'hallucinations, puis tente de suicider, est interné, et meurt finalement en juillet 1893 à l'âge de 43 ans.
